This book is a recording of some of the finest and rarest axes ever found in the Southeastern United States, the Southern Ridge Axe. Included are description, size, lithic material, weight, and general location of where each was found.

The Southern Raised Ridge Axe type is one of the most stylized of the many thousands of axes found east of the Appalachian Mountains. This axe type whose makers were artists who sought out the beautiful and fine lithic material and sculpted it into some of the most beautiful axes ever recorded from the Eastern United States.

This book covers hafting technique, manufacturing, and other aspects of the axe. Different types and descriptions are given for the seven major variants, the Southern Classic Raised Ridge Axe, Round Poll, Pointed Poll, Double Bitted, Deptford, Three Quarter, and the Miami River types. There are many pictures of each type with data provided on each.

UPPER CATAWBA RIVER - BURKE CO., N.C.: This large classic southern raised ridge axe was found years ago in the Upper Catawba River basin in Burke County, North Carolina. It is symmetrical, well made and shows no signs of ancient use wear or damage. Size: 9 1/2” long, 5 1/2” wide, 2 1/4” thick, weighs 5 pounds, 1 ounce. Southern Raised Ridge Axess
HUMPHREYS COUNTY, TENNESSEE: A pair of raised ridge axes with nice ridges and flat poles. Top one is 7 1/2” long, 3 3/4” wide, 1 1/2” thick and weighs 2 pounds, 12 ounces. Material is a fine granite. Ex Floyd Ritter collection. Lower axe is 7” long, 4 1/2” wide, 1 7/8” thick and weighs 3 pounds, 8 ounces. Material is greenstone. Ex John F. Berner collection. Both are in the collection of Rodney Peck.
